yeah, speaking as a brony who watched all 3 seasons of MLP:FiM and pretty much enjoyed all the episodes, I'm sorry to say I can't fully say the same for Equestria Girls.
But don't misunderstand, I don't hate the movie, and to say I disliked it might even be a stretch, but I simply find Equestria Girls to be mostly... mediocure.
Granted, it had some good moments, the human Mane 6 have proven just as likable as their pony counterparts, there's some decent social commentary here and there, the music was alright and still as enjoyable as songs from the show. and part of the humor I liked most involved Twilight's fish-out-of-water moments in the human world.
But the story was mostly bland compared to episodes from the show, which I find bizarre since the movie is longer, you'd think Meghan McCarthy would've taken advantage of the longer running time to tell an interesting and more complex story, or at least flesh Sunset Shimmer out as someone more than just an Egomaniac that wants to conquer both Equestria and the human world, yeah, I'll get to her in a minute.
You came say what you will about the movie's story, but aside from the first few minutes, as well as the climax at the end, much of the story consists of essentially an underdog hero (if Twilight should be called that) competing against a snooty egoist in a popularity contest.
And how many times have we seen that in any media invovling high school? yeah, alot.
I wouldn't have minded so much if the villain Sunset Shimmer was in any way interesting.
But I'm sorry to say I personally consider Sunset Shimmer to be the most boring villain in MLP:FiM.
Really, aside from letting Spike go after taking him hostage and being sorry for what she's done after being defeated, Most of Shimmer's personality seems to just consist of her being an egotistical jerk than wanted to be superior to everyone, I personally fail to see how some fans think she's on par with Discord or Chrysalis.
Granted, Sombra had very little (if any) in the way of personality, but he at least had some badass animation of him entering the Crystal Empire, corrupting anything he touches as he passes by, say what you will about him, he knows how to make an entrance!
I really wish the movie did more flesh her out, or at least gave her a stronger ending, 'cause I mean really? you're fine with Shimmer simply being left in the human world after what she pulled? Am I the only one who think the ending would've been at least slightly stronger if Twilight brought Shimmer back with her to Equestria to be at the mercy of the Equestrian princesses and given a chance to atone for her actions by.. oh I don't know, returning to being tutored by Celestia, maybe?
And some of you have complained about Babs Seed being easily forgiven, she at least had a backstory and was faced with circumstances that caused the way she acted to make sense.
Though if any of you have any good counter-arguments you wish to give to me, I'd like to hear them so long as you're civil about it.
